The Queenstown Rovers were formed in 1996 after a number of years away from formal competitions. Re-Entry into Southlands Donald Gray league quickly provided honors, winning the competition 5 times over the next eight years. In 2003 The club remained a small 1 team club, however a growing nucleus of returning players provided the stability to launch into the more aggressive Otago Premier League Competition, while silverware has proved elusive, highlights have included an unbeaten campaign in 2006, providing a 3rd place finish in the league.

The Club members change dramatically every year, with Queenstown providing for a high percentage of Visitors, keen to stay on for a season or two. This translates into an international blend of players, and it is rare not to have players from every continent taking to the field each weekend.

The Club has enjoyed extraordinary growth over the last few years. We now field a Reserves side playing in The Central Otago league (COL), of which the Rovers, along with Alexandra AFC were instrumental in forming. The COL has proved very successful, providing an outlet not just for our own members but for three new teams to the Queenstown, which we enjoy playing against. Over the three years it has been played, it has seen three champions in Alexandra 2007, Wanaka 2008 and Queenstown Rovers in 2009.

2009 also produced the First Queenstown Rovers Woman’s team. Beyond all expectations, the Women have produced the goods to win the Southland Woman’s Knockout Cup. While not entered in any other formal competition through the season, 5 friendlys provided a win return of 4 games to 1 loss, and a late season tournament against the larger Otago clubs proved valuable for future experience.

A new direction for the club has now been adopted. We aim to buck the trend of disassociating Junior and Senior Clubs, and provide a true club environment, which Football in Queenstown has never experienced. 2010 will provide our first participation in local Junior competitions, and moves have been made to secure a longer term ‘home’ for the club with Club rooms one of our primary concerns so that our members can enjoy the full benefits of membership.
